Luís Vicente Trio

The Lisbon trumpeter, composer and improviser Luís Vicente continues the series of the contemporary Portuguese jazz scene heroes in the Festival program. Since 2011, the audience has been introduced to Júlio Resende, Cristina Branco, Maria João, Susana Santos Silva, Rodrigo Amado, Mário Laginha, João Mortágua, Red Trio, Orquestra Jazz Matosinhos and TGB.

In the meantime, Vicente has built up his reputation on the jazz scene, recording about forty albums as a leader or sideman, with fellow countrymen and improvisational greats from all over the world, from entirely free to carefully written music. Already on his debut album Outeiro (2012), critics noted that he was following the footsteps of Peter Evans and Nate Wooley. Then they heard Satchmo, and the long list of inspirations that the artist himself once presented includes Miles Davis, Don Cherry, Freddie Hubbard and Mongezi Feza, as well as John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy and Evan Parker. He is mainly inclined towards jazz avant-garde, but he is also interested in electronics, noise, world music, classics, and rock. He is also inspired by nature – birds, water, smells, and landscapes.

Main collaborations: William Parker, Hamid Drake, Paal Nilssen-Love, Frank Gratkowski, Mette Rasmussen, Alexander Hawkins, Ziv Taubenfeld, Roberto Negro, John Butcher, Théo and Valentin Ceccaldi, John Dikeman... He leads trio and quartet, gives solo recitals, and is a member of numerous collectives, including Vicente-Dikeman-Parker-Drake, Chamber 4, Fail Better!, Twenty One 4tet, Frame Trio, Deux Maisons and In Layers. His trio partners, Gonçalo Almeida and Pedro Melo Alves are among the leading figures of the Portuguese jazz scene and are active in numerous projects.
