Avishai Cohen Quartet

"Like Miles Davis, he can make the trumpet a vehicle for uttering the most poignant human cries." This is how the renowned American critic Thomas Conrad describes the music of trumpet player and composer Avishai Cohen. Born and raised in Israel, where he played solos in front of a big band at the age of ten and soon toured with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Zubin Mehta, Avishai grew up in a family of musical talents – his sister is the world's best jazz clarinetist Anat and his brother Yuval is an esteemed alt saxophonist and composer. They also have a band called The 3 Cohens.

Avishai studied in Boston, won the award at the Thelonious Monk jazz trumpet competition in 1997, and then became one of the pillars of the new New York scene that flourished at the Smalls Club. He led the Trio Triveni with Omer Avital and Nasheet Waits, was a member of the SF Jazz Collective for six years, and played with the Mingus Big Band and Mingus Dynasty before joining the ECM Records family, first as a member of the Mark Turner's quartet and soon as the leader of his own quartet and ensemble Big Vicious, as well as in a duo with pianist Yonathan Avishai. Up to now, he has released twelve albums as a leader/co-leader of various formats, five with the collective Third World Love, four with the band 3 Cohens, and eight as a member of Omer Avital's lineup, among others. In Belgrade, he presents the current album Naked Truth, published by ECM in the spring of this year.

Four times in a row voted a Rising Star-Trumpet in the DownBeat Critics Poll, Cohen is today one of the true carriers of Miles' fire, an explorer of new paths, just as his great role model was.
